Segment #9. Measurements: H 3", W 4.75", D 2"
John Peña's Word Balloons installation is no longer on view, but remnants from the installation are available for purchase. Peña and our de-installation team carefully dismantled the room-sized word balloon and cut out select pieces, each piece is an actual segment from the installation. They are made from foam and plaster and should be handled with care. All measurements are estimates.
From the exhibition guide: "For the Mattress Factory Art Museum, I created both a small and large three-dimensional word balloon. I fabricated the sculptures by layering and shaping sheets of extruded foam that I then covered with plaster. I then elevated the word balloons off the ground with a series of 2 x 4s.
I wanted to explore how the act of daily speech has the capacity to carry a significant intellectual and emotional weight. When manifest in the physical world, these words can be so light and yet so heavy that they need to be braced in order to remain in the world."
Word Balloons was part of our 2014-15 Artists In Residence exhibition.
