Untitled - Rolf Julius, 1994
Suite of two lithographs. Paper: Rives BFK Standard. Ink: D.S. Crayon, 50%. Classic Litho Black, 50%.
11 15/16” x 9 ¼”
These lithographs relate to Rolf Julius’s 1988 installation Black Listens to Red (piano concerto). During this piece, pigment was sifted into small mounds onto panes of glass. These pigmented mounds were documented with a video camera. Stills were then scanned into the computer and printed. The resulting images were then arranged on the wall of the first room in a grid composition. They could be visually read as a musical score. The colors and the resulting shapes of the red and black pigment seemed to reflect the kind of sound that could be heard.
