A true tale about the magical meeting of a cat and her persons, told in 72 full-color illustrations in a rustic, cartoon, doodle, collage style. This hybrid picture book/graphic novel is about a soulful connection to a cat named Chicken and is told from an urban, progressive point of view, with intelligence, humor, and educational tidbits.
A note from Author and Illustrator Terese Jungle:
Making my daughter laugh every day has been my mission since she was born. She’s responsible for this first book because of her obsession with the mystical, synchronous, and silly nature of our cat’s true story. She implored me to “make pictures for it” after about a year of hearing the story verbally.
In the initialChickensketches, my only strategy was to aim for authenticity of characters and images that captured a mood, expression, or phrasing that made my then 5-year-old crack up or at least smile. I found the experience of reading it with her to be interactive, entertaining, and a main inspiration for her learning to read sooner by way of being introduced to comics in a picture book “setting.”
It went on to win double Gold in the 2016 Global E-book Awards (yes, it’s available for iPad and Kindle) and Bronze in the 2017 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards.
